There are different types of abdominal wall hernias including incisional, ventral, umbilical, femoral and inguinal. The type is based on where the hernia is located. Abdominal wall hernias are repaired by various techniques.

Open repair is done through an incision over the area of bulge or hernia. The hernia is reduced back into its normal position and the hole of the hernia or defect is repaired. The defect can be repaired with sutures (primary repair) if the hole is small or it can be repaired with a mesh prosthesis. Primary repair should be reserved for small size hernia defects or in emergency hernia repairs where mesh cannot be safely used. This is because there is a greater chance of a hernia coming back again without using a mesh. The incision is then closed with stitches or staples.

Hernias can also be repaired in minimally invasive ways. This is done laparoscopically or with a robotic assist. Both procedures involve small, sub centimeter incisions in the abdomen. The hernia is repaired from the inside of the abdomen. Minimally invasive surgery has bonus of less pain, easier and faster recovery, and less time spent in the hospital.

Elective hernia repair is usually an outpatient procedure. As long as the procedure goes as planned, typically you will be discharged home after the surgery to recover. You will be given a support band to wear after surgery.

Recovery after a hernia surgery is very important to prevent recurrence of your hernia. Usually no heavy lifting or strenuous activity is advised for 4-6 weeks. If you do not have a job that requires heavy lifting, you may return to work whenever you see fit. However, most patients state they feel well 5-7 days after minimally invasive surgery to return to work.
